At SmartMom, we are very excited to continue our blogger series featuring your favorite Mommy Bloggers! We go to them for advice, recipes, support and whenever Google comes up with an answer we don’t like. Let’s get to know the mommies behind these amazing blogs a bit better – why? Because they are SmartMoms; and smart moms talk to SmartMoms.
This week we hear from Stefanie Eadie of fashion and beauty blog According to Blaire. Stefanie glams up motherhood by styling her adorable four year old, Blaire, and her cute little baby bump! She gives us easy tricks and tips on how we can stay stylish and keep up with our beauty regimes all year round. Get to know the mommy behind the beauty blog below!
Here are some questions we asked –
Tell us about your kids: names, ages, and fun facts.
I currently have one almost 4 year old, and one on the way! Blaire is very smart, energetic, and has been begging for a sister for quite some time! The next baby will be a girl, arriving in late May!
Blaire has been dressing herself since she was about 18 months old, and it took me awhile to give in because I loved dressing her. But it actually inspired me to start my fashion blog, and now she’s actually pretty good at putting her own outfits together! I think it helps with individuality, creativity and self-confidence!
What are some of your favorite things about your kids?
The thing I love most about Blaire is her sweetness! After we do something for her, or take her somewhere, she’ll take a little bit to say so but she always remembers to say “thank you mommy & daddy for…” it’s so cute!
I also really admire her imagination. She can play with dolls, or anything really for hours! All with full narration and laughing!
Who do you look up to for parenting advice?
Luckily Blaire has been a great kid overall so far, but we definitely go through stages where we get frustrated or don’t know what the best parenting decision is. I like to ask my parents if they ever went through those things with me, and how they handled it. It at least lets you know that you’re not alone, and we all go through similar things! At the end of the day, you have to make the decisions that are right for you and your family.
How would you describe what you do for your blog?
As I mentioned earlier, my blog was inspired because of Blaire. We had moved across the country to a new state, where we didn’t know anyone, and I wasn’t working at the time. I needed something to keep me busy, and Blaire’s fashion sense and personality definitely inspired me to start my blog.
My blog is mainly about fashion and lifestyle. When I started it Blaire was basically already 2, so we had been through a lot of the hard parenting stages already. Now that I’m pregnant with our second, I’m excited to bring a lot more lifestyle and parenting to the blog, as well as how I keep it all together and stay fashionable as a mom.
I currently do everything for my blog: website maintenance, social media management, answer emails, take pictures, edit pictures, write the blog posts, and the many other things that come along with having your own blog.
How do you balance work and family?
Since we moved out here for my husband’s job, and so I could be able to stay home with the kids, I wanted my husband to not have to worry about anything but his job. So I was watching Blaire every day, making all of our meals, grocery shopping, errand running, paying the bills, maintaining the house, etc. I’m really not sure how I do it all now that I have a blog in the mix! I’m sure a lot of people don’t think I work, and that I’m just a housewife. But I actually work extremely hard to manage it all. I started sending Blaire to preschool 4 days a week, so I could manage everything else in those 4 days, and she could meet new people and get the education she deserves. I keep her home on Friday’s and try to do something special with her then, like seeing a movie, doing crafts, or getting our nails done. When we are all home at night I make sure we eat dinner together, and on the weekends we usually do something fun together as a family. We just started a new tradition on Sundays where we all get together on the couch with popcorn and watch a new movie!
What does an ideal day look like for you?
Usually we don’t get up until 7:30 or so, which may seem late to some people but I usually stay up late working on blog things, or taking time for myself after Blaire goes to bed! After we wake up, we get dressed, make lunch for school, and get there around 8:30/9am. I usually get some coffee or breakfast and then I head back to the house to get some blog stuff done. Whether that’s a post, emails or keeping up with social media.
I do that for a few hours, then typically with run my errands for the day. I meet up with a friend one or two times a week to take a TRX class before we pick up our kids from school. Usually one day of the week I leave open for any appointments such as doctor, hair, home repair appointments, house cleanings, etc. And then another day I split between blog work and a scheduled photoshoot. I pick Blaire up from school, come home, make dinner for everyone. Then I’ll give Blaire a bath and let her play for a bit while I get some more things done. Then she’s off to bed and I can either have me time or do things for According to Blaire.
What were some of the biggest questions you had or challenges you faced as a first time mom?
I was one of the first of my friends and family members to have a baby, so it was a little different to be the only ones with a baby. It was definitely hard managing a full time job with demanding hours, while my husband’s job was just as important if not more than mine. There were a lot of times where we would get a call from Blaire’s school that she was sick, and if my husband was out of town, and I was the only one at work I wasn’t able to leave. Obviously I would have done anything if I had to but we relied on our parents to fill in when we needed them. But I worked late hours sometimes, closing down a department store at midnight, and it wasn’t fair to our parents that they had to drop everything including their jobs when we couldn’t. My husband, Jason got a job offer out of state that we couldn’t refuse, and it would allow me to stay home. So within a month we dropped everything and moved to Virginia. That was another difficult thing to do as a new parent. We didn’t know anyone here, and we didn’t have any family anywhere nearby. It still can be a challenge, but we’ve made it work, and it’s brought our little family together closer than I could have ever imagined!
I never really had any questions as a new mom. I always managed to stay calm, which I think made a huge difference!
How did becoming a mom change who you are?
I’m not sure being a mom really changed who I am, but I definitely think a lot less about myself and more about her first.
What are your favorite baby products you’ve discovered since becoming a parent?
It’s been a bit since actual baby products, but finding a good sippy cup can be really hard! We still use the Miracle 360 cups, that don’t spill at all, so they’re perfect for everyday use and especially car rides. Also finding good portable snacks are something that’s always been important. Instead of bringing lots of toys places all I need to really bring are snacks! We like squeezable yogurts and Buddy Fruits! I remember when Blaire was an infant we had a small Boppy that was a must have, and a snuggle nest for when she would lay in our bed for awhile. Those were nice because they kept her from really going anywhere!
What was the most surprising or unexpected thing about becoming a mom?
Just that you’re pretty much tired for the rest of your life. Ha. That was surprising. Although I finally found myself not as tired the last year leading up to pregnancy. But it’s back for the long haul. I was also surprised how much you worry all the time about them, and their future. I heard once that having kids is like having your heart walk around outside of your body, and I don’t think that could be more true.
