At SmartMom, we are very excited to announce a new blogger series featuring your favorite Mommy Bloggers! We go to them for advice, recipes, support and whenever Google comes up with an answer we don’t like. Let’s get to know the mommies behind these amazing blogs a bit better – why? Because they are SmartMoms; and smart moms talk to SmartMoms.
This week we hear from Jennifer Corter of Corter Moon. Sounds whimsical, right? Reading Jennifer’s blog is like taking a trip into her whimsical world. Her creativity is contagious making us want to craft right alongside her sweet little 6-year-old son. She’s written for some of our favorite outlets like What to Expect and recently published a book! Get to know the mom behind the moon this week.
Here are some questions we asked –
Tell us about your kids: names, ages, and fun facts.
I have one son, named Syrus Voltaire. He is six years old, and just a total bundle of energy. He is so much fun and full of joy. He is obsessed with Harry Potter, Star Wars and Batman, strange combination, right? He loves animals and everything about nature.
What are some of your favorite things about your kids?
I would have to say that my favorite thing about my son is his ability to relate to others. He is so compassionate and caring. If you’re upset about something, he’ll come up to you and give you a hug and tell you it’s all going to be okay. If you’re crying, he’ll bring you a box of tissues and dab your eyes. He is a total sweetheart.
Who do you look up to for parenting advice?
I look up to both my mother and my mother-in-law for parenting advice. They are both extremely wise women, filled with all kinds of advice and wisdom when it comes to parenting.
How would you describe what you do for your blog?
My blog was born out of a place for me to write about the adventures of Syrus. There are so many things that he does that I want to document, and I thought that a blog was a great way to do that. He is funny, smart and does the most hilarious things. I’ve been blogging for about three years now, on my blog, as well as on different parenting websites, and I have a steady audience, which I am so grateful for.
How do you balance work and family?
I work at home, writing and blogging, as well as working on my books – I’ve published one and the next one comes out December 16th! So it is pretty easy to balance work and family. I am so lucky to have my mom as well, when I have to write, she watches and keeps Syrus occupied. When I am not working, you can find me playing with the little one, or crafting – he loves crafting!
What does an ideal day look like for you?
My ideal day would be sleeping in! Just kidding. My ideal day is waking up to the aroma of delicious coffee, before my son wakes up, where my husband and I can watch the news and catch up with each other. Then, we would spend the day outdoors, as we love everything about nature. We would hike and teach Syrus all about the wildlife, flora and fauna that is all around him. Then we would end the day with a delicious meal at a local diner, go home, get into our pajamas and cuddle until it was time for bed.
What were some of the biggest questions you had or challenges you faced as a first time mom?
I think my biggest question was how to discipline my son as he got older. It wasn’t so much the “terrible twos” as it was the “fearsome fours.” Luckily, we’ve learned that it takes time, and talking on their level that helps them learn what was done wrong and how to make things right.
How did becoming a mom change who you are?
I remember holding the pregnancy test in my hand that had the little digital ‘Yes’ on it, being both scared to death and over the moon at the same time. I was afraid I wouldn’t be a good parent, and yet, I already loved this little life growing inside of me. Becoming a mom has made me look at the world in a different way. I am able to see things through the eyes of a child again, enjoy the wonder, experience the awe of learning about new things. My son has changed my life forever.
What are you favorite baby products you’ve discovered since becoming a parent?
We we’re pretty taken with the Graco Nautilus 3-In-1 Carseat when Syrus turned one. It seems that all the really cool gadgets, like the video baby monitors and incredible carseats came out after Syrus outgrew everything!
What was the most surprising or unexpected thing about becoming a mom?
The most surprising thing about becoming a mom to me is the incredible love that I feel for this tiny life. I would lay down my own for his. I never knew that someone could feel that way about another person. My son brings joy and purpose into my life, makes me laugh, lifts me up when I’m down and is the most amazing person that I know.
